I came into this class without any expectations.  I registered for the class because it sounded interesting and I felt that I needed to get away from taking all English classes.  Overall, this class was really helpful in introducing different technologies that I can use outside of school as an English major which is a big positive.  With that said, I’m still a little torn about the first half of the class and its overall relevance to the rest of the course.

To be clear, I think reading some articles is important to the class.  I feel that Professor Groom needs a way to introduce the digital story aspect in an organized way and articles will do just that.  I just wish there was more to the first half of the class than article reading and discussing them in class because that got a little repetitive.  I do wish we were able to learn how to design our websites.  In Zach Whalen’s 202 class, he gave us a CSS/HTML tutorial before we started designing our websites which I thought would have been beneficial to this class instead of depending on us to figure it out.  I wouldn’t call myself computer illiterate, but I definitely couldn’t teach myself code.  Adding CSS would be an easy and beneficial addition to the class because I feel I could really use this.

The second half of the class was a totally different story.  I really enjoyed the projects we were working on and really appreciated how simple the programs were to work.  In fact, I don’t think there was an assignment I didn’t like in the second half of the semester.

I really enjoyed the Audacity audio project where we made our own stories using sound effects.  This really forced us to think about what makes a story a story, but with an additional twist that we aren’t telling the story in the most conventional way.

The movie project was okay, but I would have rather been able to use any kind of video instead one of those old fashioned movies.  I think doing more with iMovie and Windows Movie Maker would be good because I feel those are the most used tools in terms of telling stories.

I loved the Jing project because it was something I had never used before and I like learning about new technologies.  What really helped was that we were telling a story about something familiar to all of us so the focus was on using Jing properly, not having to come up with some kind of story.

Overall, I feel like my digital story was indeed a story.  In my presentation I talked about the story of athletes on their teams and I think it is a story, especially when you go beyond the work they do as athletes.  Sports teams tell a story every time they go on the field/rink/court and it really is an ongoing story, even off season.  As long as the sport is around and the team is around, something will always be happening be it games, charity events, or off season trades/signings.
